Another tip:
Don't leave a full can or six pack behind in the car in the hot sun. Due to the raising temperature the can will explode.
Sorry, no pictures, only a big mess in my sister's car back in the summer of 2006.

My friend left some Pepsi cans in her car trunk on a ski trip during the winter. The cans bubbled up (and looked quite interesting) but luckily didn't explode.

Another somewhat related thing to think about in addition to emptying cans for the collection - cleaning the outside thoroughly. I was cleaning some cans a few days ago that had been in storage for several years, just using warm water and my hands, and a couple of spots where the soda had dried on the outside actually took some of the logo off. Very small, and no damage to the aluminum at all. Luckily it was not a rare or hard-to-find can
