I've seen the thread about how to make a "fake airfilled" cans - which is something I haven't done... but might think about once I get another very special can (like gold yoda cans, etc...) Myself - I normally just use a bottle opener (similar to picture below) - and will on the bottom of the can, poke 1 small "vent" hole (with paper towel over can so it doesn't squirt everywhere) - then on the opposet side of the bottom of the can, will open a bigger hole. This allows me to easily pour the soda out into a glass & drink the soda (I'll drink almost anything) - and it also allows me to easily rinse out the inside of the can so it doesn't attract bugs & such. So doing all this still keeps the can very presentable sitting on a shelf - still allows me to drink the soda - and allows me to clean out the can. So what do other people do?

I top open all of my cans with the tab. I know some serious collectors would look down on me for this, but my philosophy is that it is better to have the can than not at all. More specifically, things like small dents, rust, small holes, or even top opened cans to me are ok if that is the best condition I can get a can in. Someday, cans might not be made anymore...then what? Our collections will all increase in value because cans will be more scarce. Not to mention the thousands of can designs we have seen over the years. I'm sure there are many "extinct" cans (cans that existed, that no one has anymore). I've never been specific as to how I like cans opened in my collection. That said, it doesn't sound like it would be that much effort to bottom open cans...I just have never tried it. Well, there's one answer/opinion for you. I'm curious what other collectors think. If you are reading this...please take a few seconds and post what you do...

Hi, I am writing this from my vacation address in France. I have here limited Internet accesss.
As for the thread: how do you open your cans: Most cans I open with a tool, like a screwdriver, only it has a point. Some cans, as I do not drink all the cans meself, I open "the fake airfilled"method. I use this method mostly for cans that are way past there expery date or soda cans for my father, who does not like the bubbles in the soda.
I also use a canopener (or churchkey in the can collector's world) like macoan does, but it is more difficult on steel cans of which are still many around in Europe.
Regards,
Allcans

I pretty much open my cans the same way. I did some traveling recently and I was sure to bring my can opener and "hole poker". My friend encourages me to learn the "air filled" or "No hole" technique but the bottom of the can will never be seen anyways, once it's on the shelf. As you said, it's still very presentable.

I open my cans using the tab aswell. It just seems like the logical thing to do.

I use a churchkey to open from the bottom.
Some collectors do not want top opened cans so I have to do it this way.
Fake airfilled takes too much of my time.

I tried making a fake airfill today. I ended up making 7 holes but it still didn't pour out normally. Also I can't rinse the can afterwards.
It looks okai but IMO there's too many downsides to it. I'll remain opening the tab as it was intended.
