EASTON, Pa. -- Local snowboarders and skiers will get a chance to pull off big tricks in a place where it's never been done before.
The slope will be right in the heart of Easton.
It may be hard to imagine, but a portion of Centre Square will be filled with snow from Big Boulder on February 12.
The slope will start with an eight-foot drop and organizers hope, at the end day, people will walk away after having a lot of fun.
"It's a big deal for Easton," said local snowboarder Dave Smith. "The sport is rising, the popularity has grown with X-games and the Olympics."
The event will be called Rail Jam and snow will be furnished by Jack Frost Big Boulder in the Poconos.
Snowboarders and skiers will get the chance to show off their tricks and win big prizes.
Easton-based Drinky's helped bring the national event to town.
"Right now, I'm trying to get other vendors to participate," said Billy Cornish, owner of Drinky's. "Some local bands, I have local DJ's that are going to be playing. Also weather permitting and just try to get the whole community involved."
"All special events bring people to town and it's an opportunity, like the crayon drop brought a lot of families downtown," said Mayor Sal Panto, (D) Easton. "I saw people from the suburbs that I haven't seen in the city probably for decades."
The goal is getting more people, especially local youth, involved in downtown Easton. Officials hope Rail Jam will be the perfect event to do that.
"So we're always looking for events like this," said Smith "It gets the community, the snowboarding community together."
